Jazz Losing Its Place in Popular Media
As a youngster my two primary outlets for learning about jazz and many other musical styles were radio and magazines. In both South Georgia and East Tennessee (the two areas where I grew up) there were black formatted stations that aired jazz, blues and gospel programs during the weekends and early morning hours.

During those days such magazines as Esquire, Ebony, The New Yorker, The Atlantic (it was Atlantic Monthly then) The Village Voice, even Harper's and the Saturday Evening Post either regularly or periodically included jazz coverage.

Today, it is extremely rare when you see jazz articles in any major or mainstream general interest magazine. With a notable handful of exceptions (New York Times, Washington Post, Chicago Tribune and Sun Times, New York Daily News, LA Times to cite a few), newspapers have abandoned jazz and blues artists, shows and recordings.
