Thursday, July 1, 2010 6:30 pm CDT | Jazz @ Bull & Whistle Pub (Lebanon) Sid Vicious, the infamous bassist for the Sex Pistols, once described their tunes this way:
“You just pick up a chord, go twang, and you're got music.”

Located in Lebanon's historic Mill, the B&W Pub offers a full menu (online) of very tasty food accompanied by jazz from a bygone era.
The band consists of Glenn Martin, piano and trombone, Sam Frazee, gut string guitar, Hugh Bramhall, drums, Ryan Williams, electric guitar, and Wayne Renardson, acoustic bass. They play from 6:30 until 8:30 every Thursday evening. There is no cover, ample free parking, and a jazz-friendly crowd.

Thursday, July 8, 2010 6:30 pm CDT | Jazz @ Bull & Whistle Pub (Lebanon) Sun Ra's elegant solution to the oil shortage might have merit if....
" There will come a day when you won't have to use
gasoline. You'd simply take a cassette and put it in your car, let it run. You'd have to have the proper type of music. Like you take two sticks, put 'em together, make fire. You take some notes and rub 'em together - dum, dum, dum, dum - fire, cosmic fire."
-Sun Ra
The Glenn Martin Quartet, with some truly cosmic players sitting in, will be at the Old Mill in Lebanon this Thursday evening to play some jazz tunes from an era when gasoline was 30 cents/gallon. Featuring Glenn Martin on piano and trombone, Ryan Williams on guitar, Hugh Bramhall, drums, and Wayne Renardson, acoustic bass, the music will celebrate tunes from Cole Porter, Miles Davis, Rodgers & Hart, Jobim, George Gershwin, and Jerome Kern.

Thursday, July 15, 2010 6:30 pm CDT | Jazz @ Bull & Whistle (Old Mill-Lebanon) Jazz @t the Bull & Whistle in the Old Mill
Alto saxman Paul Desmond once remarked that, "I think I had it in the back of my mind that I wanted to sound like a dry martini."
While the Bull & Whistle serves both gin and vodka, the Glenn Martin Quartet, minus Glenn, will capture the sound of four splashes of vermouth this Thursday evening . We promise jazz tunes that have been around for many years, with an solemn oath not to cover anything by Lady Gaga or, well....you know.
Mr. Desmond once remarked, when asked how he got his melodious tone, "I honestly don't know! It has something to do with the fact that I play illegally." The only illegal thing will be the smile on our faces.
Playing legal tunes will be Tiger Fitzhugh, guitar, Hugh Bramhall, drums and congas, Ryan Williams, guitar, and Wayne Renardson, acoustic bass. Some of the usual suspects are sure to show up to sit in, and jazz players are invited to join us. A setlist is available from Wayne at: wayne@renardson.org
The group will begin playing 6:30 and knock off a few hours later.

Jam sessions are led by saxophonist Evan Cobb and his quartet, with a featured guest artist each month. Participation is designed for musicians of all ability levels. The return of the Workshop Jam Session is a bit reformatted. Besides playing (or singing) a few choice selections, the guest artist will speak about the songs they selected, learning tunes in general, and their personal experiences with jam sessions. The host band will also provide the guest artist with a new tune (with copies for everyone in attendance) so that the audience can hear how a professional dissects a chart on the fly while on the bandstand! All in attendance at the jam will also receive a copy of a tune (most likely a blues) for them to try in just the same manner as the featured guest. The focus of the workshop jazz jam will be to learn about playing, listening critically, and the process of jam sessions altogether.

Thursday, July 29, 2010 6:30 pm CDT | Jazz @ Bull & Whistle (Old Mill Lebanon) Liberace's Revenge: a speedy one-act play.
Setting: The Drink lounge at Bull & Whistle:
Personae:
An old man (OM) and his son, a goth kid (GK) who wants to be a jazzman.
GK: What kinda place is this? Full of lounge lizards. Where's Wayne Newton?
OM: I agree it is a tad bourgeois for your taste son, but the music is first-rate. And there is some handsome scenery to view. Check the bar.
GK: Buncha old geezers over thirty. Can't trust them. Bet the band won't play any Green Day tunes for these folks.
OM: You're correct. They will play music that your grandmother listened to, enjoyed, and once even fell in love while hearing some of the melodies. That's where I came from.
GK: Well it's true I don't see Wayne Newton or Liberace, but those people setting up look like they play jazz. I see a piano, trombone, glad someone has a guitar, and the rhythm section looks like an Oreo cookie. So they must play jazz.
OM: They do. Standards by the masters, stuff that has endured for a reason. Older than both of us. They are Glenn Martin's Quartet with Glenn on piano and bone, Ryan Williams on guitar, Hugh Bramhall on drums, and Wayne Renardson, acoustic bass. Now let's go have a drink and listen. You'll hear some classic tunes played with a bit of grace and even style.
Come join us at the Bull & Whistle this Thursday evening and hear for yourself. The music begins at 6:30 and we knock off a few hours later.
Sit-ins are welcome. Setlist available from Wayne via e-mail wayne@renardson.org
