SPECIAL NOTE
Many in our musical community have been affected by the recent flood, and many others in the community are rallying to help. Elsewhere on this site we have information about efforts to aid local musicians. We encourage everyone to lend their support. The TJBS intends to donate a portion of the net proceeds from this year's concert season to flood relief.
CONCERT LINEUP: ROD MCGAHA -- Sunday, June 13, 6-8 pm A Chicago native, Rod McGaha was a protege of Clark Terry and Max Roach. Since coming to Nashville has established himself as a wholly original voice on the jazz scene and one of the city’s favorite jazz performers. His music blends bebop, traditional jazz, gospel, & funk, and is always swinging! Reviewing a recent performance by McGaha and his band, TJBS's Maxx Myrick noted: "Trumpeter Rod McGaha has been in the shed. Those in attendance . . . were treated to a set of all original tunes, and given a preview of things to come. McGaha served notice that he has gotten back to his Chicago roots when he opened the set with a tune called 'The Challenge,' a swinging hard bop selection with an intricate and difficult arrangement deftly handled by his ensemble, that included saxophonist Don Aliquo, Jerry Navarro on bass, Jody Nardone on piano and Nioshi Jackson on drums . . . next was a funk inspired selection called 'Unexpected Soul' that began with Jackson summoning the spirit of James Brown. The set ended with a beautiful ballad that reminded everyone of the intellect, sophistication, and earnest original voice that jazz legends Clark Terry and Max Roach recognized in him long ago."
